Pfizer is currently testing a pill which works against the COVID-19 virus, and should the trials happening in US and Belgium prove successful, the pill could be ready for use this very year. So far, only vaccines and health restrictions have provided defence against COVID-19, but this pill could potentially make lockdowns obsolete.
The pill could potentially help help severe illnesses in people in whom vaccines cannot function as effectively. It could also provide a second line of defence should a new variant immune to various medicines emerges. Professor Kevin Blyth, a scientist from the University of Glasgow stated that ‘it would be a huge step forward if antiviral drugs work… Normal services can function and you don’t have to have lockdown.’
