Notre Dame Bells Ring Out For First Time Since 2019 Fire

Nov 9 2024 Share

The bells of Notre Dame in Paris rang together on Friday for the first time since the devastating 2019 fire, according to AFP reporters.

The sound of all eight bells from the northern belfry resonated a month before the cathedral is set to reopen after five years of meticulous restoration.

“This is a beautiful, important, and symbolic step,” said Philippe Jost, who leads the organization responsible for the cathedral’s restoration under challenging conditions.

On the evening of April 15, 2019, people in Paris and around the world watched in shock as flames engulfed the UNESCO World Heritage site, ultimately bringing down its spire.

President Emmanuel Macron swiftly committed to an ambitious five-year restoration plan, promising to make Notre Dame “even more beautiful” than before.

Around 250 companies and hundreds of specialists worked together on the project, costing hundreds of millions of euros.

At 10:30 am (0930 GMT) on Friday, the bells began to sound one by one, eventually chiming together in harmony for about five minutes.
