FOBO: Workers’ Fear Of Becoming Obsolete

FROM FOMO TO FOBO: FEAR OF BECOMING OBSOLETE
Oct 9 2023 Share

FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out, is a well-known term describing the anxiety of missing out on exciting events or experiences.

It gained recognition in 2004 and is now in the Oxford English Dictionary. However, a new term, FOBO, is emerging, primarily in business contexts.

FOBO stands for Fear of Becoming Obsolete and pertains to concerns about one’s role becoming irrelevant, often due to advancements in technology like AI.

A Gallup poll reveals a 22% increase in US workers worrying about technology making their jobs obsolete, up from 2021. This rise is particularly notable among those with higher education, jumping from 8% to 20%.

Goldman Sachs even predicts that generative AI could potentially automate 300 million full-time jobs, adding weight to these concerns. To combat FOBO, it’s advised to conduct a career assessment, identifying areas for improvement and taking steps to enhance them.

Upskilling through work-sponsored programs or online courses can be beneficial. Building professional relationships with colleagues, mentors, and industry experts can also help stay updated with industry trends.

Of course, from the side of the employer, a more human centred approach to support workers could go a very long way.

London Named Best City In The World For 2023

London Named Best City In The World For 2023
Oct 9 2023 Share

London has been named the best city in the world for 2023, marking the eighth consecutive year it has secured the top spot according to Resonance Consultancy.

This ranking is based on metrics like ‘liveability’, ‘lovability’, and ‘prosperity’, considering factors such as airport connectivity, parks, restaurants, nightlife, education, and GDP.

London’s rich cultural scene, including numerous museums and theatres, contributed to its high score. The newly opened Elizabeth line also bolstered its transportation network.

In second place is Paris, known for its sustainability efforts and preparations for the 2024 Olympics.

New York takes third place, expecting a staggering 61 million tourists in 2023. The full list of top cities includes Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai, San Francisco, Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Seoul.

London’s top position is attributed to its exceptional restaurants, extensive social media presence, and a significant number of luxury properties. Despite concerns over Brexit and the pandemic, the city has maintained its allure for investors and tourists alike.

The high number of luxury property sales in 2022 indicates continued interest from affluent buyers. While London’s success in these rankings is notable, it’s important to consider its impact on average residents, given factors like low corporation tax in the UK. Interestingly, London was the only UK city in the top 50, leaving out previous winner Edinburgh.
