Amber Heard’s lawyer says she cannot pay $10.4 million settlement

Amber Heard’s lawyer says she cannot pay $10.4 million settlement
Jun 6 2022 Share

Speaking to TODAY, Amber Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft said that her client cannot pay the $10.4 million settlement which was announced on the 1st of June.

When asked about whether or not Heard can pay the whopping amount, Bredehoft replied with: ‘Oh no. Absolutely not.’

However, the lawyer did reveal that Heard plans on appealing the verdict and that ‘she has some excellent grounds for it.’ The lawyer said that the message the final verdict sends out is a horrible one as it is a significant setback.

Bredehoft said that Heard had been demonised throughout the trial and claimed that a number of things were allowed in court that should not have been allowed, confusing the jury in the process.

Meanwhile, GoFundMe has shut down a fundraiser which claimed to be raising money to help Heard pay Johnny Depp some of the money she now owes him for the defamation trial.

Heard herself was awarded $2m in damages for comments made by Depp’s former lawyer. This brings her settlement down to around $8.34m. The fundraiser on GoFundMe however was quickly shut down after it was determined that neither Heard nor anyone on her team created the page.

Around 5 domestic abuse reports per day in Malta as of 2021
Jun 6 2022 Share

As of 2020, there have been 2,300 reports of domestic violence in Malta, with the court receiving around 4900 accusations relating to such violence.

In related news, Talk.mt reported that around 5 reports of domestic violence are being issued on a daily basis, according to digits provided by the police corps. The latter news portal reported that in 2021 alone, there were 1,932 reports.

Of these, 1,414 were issued by women whereas 518 were issued by men. This gives us an average of around 5.3 domestic abuse reports everyday. The most common form of abuse was psychological, with women reporting much more cases of such abuse.

Physical abuse was the most common following psychological abuse. 392 women reported physical harm which yields light injuries, with 131 men reporting such abuse. Physical abuse with grievous injuries was reported less, but women still reported much more such cases.

Stalking is also another form of abuse which takes place in Malta. In 2021, 43 women reported to have been stalked whereas only 3 men reported such incidents.

Speaking to ONE News, Superintendent Johann Fenech revealed that many factors could contribute to such numbers. However, the reporting indicates that people are aware of means which offer support to victims and encouraged anyone suffering to seek aid. Despite highlighting a horrific reality, the more reports issued the more people can be helped.
