Information tabled in Parliament shows that, between January and May of this year, 6,929 traffic fines were issued for drivers using their phones whilst driving.
Police caught 2,143 of these, with Transport Malta catching 701, CCTV catching 28 and LESA catching a whopping 4,057.
Meanwhile, 19,984 fines were issued for persons ignoring traffic signs, with LESA once again catching the majority with a total of 7,124.
LESA also caught the majority of commuters not wearing seatbelts on Maltese roads at 1,500, with the grand total in 2023 so far amounting to 2,605. The total of these contraventions amounts to 29,518.
Minister Byron Camilleri also provided the data for 2022, which shows that the grand total of fines for these separate offences add up to 75,065.
The grand total, starting from January of 2022 to May of 2023, amounts to 104,583 contraventions, with the ignoring of traffic signs taking the lead at 73,084. This is followed by the use of phones at 21,047 and lack of seatbelt use at 10,452.
