Mediterranean Earthquakes Leave Impact On Malta

Mar 29 2024 Share

On Friday morning, tremors were experienced throughout Malta following reports of a 5.9 magnitude earthquake striking Greece, characterized as ‘moderately strong’.

Numerous accounts surfaced on social media, detailing rooms shaking and residents being awakened from sleep across the island on Good Friday.

In addition to the earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean near Greece, there was also a 3.8 magnitude earthquake near the small Italian island of Pantelleria, which lies further north and west of Malta. Though smaller in magnitude compared to the earthquake in Greece, it likely contributed to the impact felt in Malta.

The automated detection system of the Malta Seismic Monitoring Group registered tremors in Malta shortly after 8 am (7 am UTC), peaking in intensity for a few seconds before gradually diminishing into less noticeable aftershocks over a span of approximately ten minutes.

As per the Associated Press, the earthquake occurred just off the southern coast of Greece, near the Peloponnese region. A representative from the Malta Seismic Monitoring Group mentioned that this area is often prone to earthquakes associated with the Hellenic subduction zone.

Although there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, the quake was felt extensively, reaching as far as Athens and even extending to Crete.

AI Shows Malta As A Dune Like Desert

Mar 29 2024 Share

Yesterday Malta suffered from an invasion of dust from the Sahara desert leading to an unclear and hazy atmosphere similar to the one seen in the recently released blockbuster movie, Dune 2.

The unusual events of yesterday’s weather prompted infamous Instagram page malta.ai to imagine what Malta would look like if it happened to become a desert akin to the world seen in Dune.

Since 2008, the Puttinu Cares Foundation has been dedicated to supporting Maltese patients undergoing treatment in the UK by providing them with accommodation. Due to the high costs of staying in London for treatment—spanning from weeks to years—80 patients from Malta find themselves in need of affordable housing each month.

Initially, the foundation acquired an 8-apartment block in Martin Court Sutton and later added another 12-apartment block, named Puttinu House Sutton, making a total of 20 apartments available for patients.

In a significant expansion, the foundation has recently purchased a freehold building in Central London’s Zone 1. Plans are underway to add an additional floor to this building, which will result in 27 new studio apartments. This expansion requires a complete refurbishment to meet the needs of both patients and their families.

With a project cost of 25 million euros, Puttinu Cares is once again reaching out to the community for financial support. Contributions can be made by sharing the foundation’s message or by sponsoring a room, which will be acknowledged with a plaque bearing the sponsor’s name.

The foundation is organising a fundraising marathon on Good Friday, 29th March 2024, to be aired on TVM and local channels. Supporters will receive public acknowledgment during the broadcast. This initiative underlines the foundation’s commitment to providing peace of mind and support to current and future patients during their treatment in the UK.
