Nationalist MP Alex Borg has publicly criticised the government’s newly introduced booking system for visits to the Blue Lagoon in Comino, calling it “a step backwards” that unfairly restricts Maltese citizens.
In a social media post, Borg acknowledged the need to manage overcrowding, especially in summer, but argued that locals should not be treated like tourists.
Borg proposed a fairer approach, where booking is required only for tourists arriving on cruise or tour boats, while Maltese and Gozitans arriving by private means would be exempt or subject to minimal registration.
Activist group Moviment Graffitti echoed similar concerns, accusing the government of deliberately avoiding action against major commercial operators, like large tourist vessels that offload thousands daily.
They warned the new system risks favouring businesses while restricting access for residents, and criticised the lack of transparency over Comino’s carrying capacity.
Graffitti also raised alarm over provisions allowing up to 4,000 people to remain in the Blue Lagoon between 8pm and 10pm, which they say threatens the island’s fragile ecosystem. They further condemned the recent approval of Comino Hotel’s expansion plans.
Both Borg and Moviment Graffitti are calling for a system that protects Comino’s environment without sidelining the rights of the Maltese public.
