Independent MP Rosianne Cutajar took to social media to discuss Bill 28, which passed unanimously in parliament last Wednesday and effectively introduced abortion for the first time in Malta.
Cutajar wrote that the new law was not enough, and was a watered down version of what was originally proposed.
She revealed in the post that she had asked the Speaker of the House if she could deliver a statement about why individual electronic votes were not taken for this bill, which was the usual norm.
She rhetorically asked whether this was because not everyone was in favour, but her request was not granted by the Speaker.
The request was also denied after the Nationalist Party objected to her request for a statement, Cutajar claimed.
‘I, like many out there, believe that the new amendments are not enough as they do not give full tranquility to the woman. Worse yet, they make the life of a vulnerable woman more complicated.’
She said that the bill was not explained as it should have been, the narrative ‘escaped us’ and ‘misinformation along with conservative forces won over common sense.’
