Aug 27 2023 Share

Another night of inspections on Maltese roads saw various local entities coordinating together to surveil the adherence to law related to driving, prohibited substances and immigration, amongst others.

In a large number of inspections, it was found in the absolute majority of those stopped that they were adhering to the law, with those not doing so having to face immediate consequence.

The work was coordinated between the police corps, Transport Malta, and LESA. Due to the inspections related to immigration, the Detention Services Department also played a role in the surveillance efforts.

During the night in question (25th of August to 26th of August 2023), 267 vehicles were stopped in various roads, most notably in Furjana and Valletta.

Searches on vehicles, breathlyzer tests, Y-plate inspections, document verifications and residence permit checks for irregular immigration were carried out. The rule breaking discovered varied from license-less driving and simple drug possession.

The entities in question appeal to the public to adhere to the law so that our roads are more secure. The work shall be continuing, a statement by the entities stated.

Study Exposes Smartphone Dependency In Parenting

Aug 26 2023 Share

An astounding 43% of parents are utterly clueless about how previous generations managed to raise children before the advent of smartphones.

This alarming statistic emerged from a UK-based study conducted by OnePoll.com, in collaboration with the renowned phone company Three UK, leaving experts flabbergasted.

This new research has spotlighted the unprecedented role that these pocket-sized devices play in modern parenting. The study delved deep into the habits of 1,000 respondents with children aged 6 and under, revealing a dependency on smartphones that has left many scratching their heads.

Gone are the days of relying on traditional parenting wisdom, as the study uncovered that moms and dads now resort to their trusty smartphones for a wide array of parenting tasks. Whether it’s shopping for their little ones or seeking advice on child-rearing conundrums, these handheld gadgets have become an integral part of the parental toolkit. Astoundingly, parents reportedly use their smartphones up to a staggering 77 times a week in their quest for guidance.

In fact, an overwhelming 61% of respondents attested that their smartphones were the most helpful tool in their child-rearing journey, overshadowing age-old wisdom passed down through generations.

The study found that a staggering 34% of parents have had to increase their data plans to accommodate their skyrocketing phone usage. In an era of boundless connectivity, most parents confessed to exceeding their data limits by a substantial five gigabytes each month.

The study uncovered that a whopping 36% of parents attribute their data usage to downloading and streaming content for their little ones. With an astonishing average of 12 hours of streamed content each week, it’s clear that screens have taken center stage in the world of modern childhood entertainment.

Collaboration in Heart of Local Communities: A Proactive Approach to Crime Prevention

Aug 26 2023 Share

The diligent efforts of the Police Force in local communities remain a cornerstone of their daily operations, as they continue to employ a proactive strategy to prevent crime and ensure public safety. Through a multi-faceted approach, law enforcement units are working together to carry out regular checks and inspections aimed at maintaining order and swiftly addressing any potential threats.

Integral to this effort are the District and Community Police teams, whose primary focus lies within the heart of cities and villages, where they engage with residents, monitor activities, and respond swiftly to emerging issues. These units are augmented by specialised teams that collaborate with the Police on a daily basis, contributing to a comprehensive and coordinated approach to maintaining law and order.

One significant aspect of these operations is the inspection and monitoring of immigration-related matters. The Police, working in tandem with officers from the Detention Services, conduct thorough inspections that encompass residences, vehicles, and specific areas. Recent immigration-related checks were conducted in various localities including Marsa, Qormi, Wied il-Għajn, and Birżebbuġa.

Individuals found to be residing irregularly in Malta are swiftly detained and transferred to the Detention Centre. From there, arrangements are made for their repatriation to their country of origin or another suitable destination where they can legally reside. The diverse nationalities encountered in the recent inspections reflect the complex nature of immigration, with individuals hailing from Serbia, Morocco, Syria, Ghana, Gambia, Mali, Nigeria, and Guinea.

Collaboration with various entities is a recurring theme in the Police’s efforts, highlighting their commitment to a multi-agency approach to tackling a range of issues. For instance, in matters related to road safety and the enforcement of traffic laws, joint efforts are undertaken with Transport Malta and LESA (Land and Transport Authority). This synergy allows for a more comprehensive approach to maintaining order on the roads and ensuring public safety.

This proactive strategy forms an essential part of the Police’s commitment to the communities they serve. Through their presence, education, and swift actions when necessary, they are not only deterring criminal activities but also fostering a sense of security and public order.

As the Police continue to work closely with local communities, other agencies, and stakeholders, their dedication to preventing crime and ensuring the well-being of citizens remains steadfast. The message is clear: by working hand in hand, they are building safer neighbourhoods and sending a resounding signal in favour of public order and security.
