In an extraordinary turn of events, Malta has recorded seven turtle nests this summer. At around 3 am on August 2nd, 2024, an Ecological Monitor at Golden Bay spotted a turtle emerging from the sea. The monitor quickly alerted the Nature Trust – FEE Malta volunteer on duty, who then contacted the nest coordinators and ERA – Environment & Resources Authority officials.
The turtle, identified by a microchip as Shirley, was found to have also laid Nest 4 earlier this year. After laying her eggs, ERA officials cordoned off the new nest to protect it.
This brings the total to an unprecedented seven nests incubating simultaneously on Maltese beaches. Adding to the excitement, Wildlife Rescue Malta has posted footage of these turtles, providing a rare glimpse into their nesting journey.
