A brief recap of Bernard Grech’s political rally speech in Żurrieq

Here are the main points made by Opposition leader Bernard Grech during the Nationalist Party rally in Żurrieq this evening.

  • The rally started started by calling for 1 minute of silence in respect to the situation in Ukraine. Bernard Grech urged the government to halt the selling of passports to Russian Nationals and stop any sporting events between Malta and Russia as Ukraine is invaded by Vladimir Putin’s military force.
  • The Opposition leader took constant digs at Prime Minister Robert Abela for not launching their Electoral Manifest. He contrasted this with the early launch of the PN Electoral Manifest as this shows how prepared the PN are for this election.
  • Grech stated that the PL are trying to downplay the PN’s manifest as that’s the only thing they can do. This is because, according to Grech, the Labour Party have not released their own manifest and are therefore not prepared for this election.
  • The PN went on to push youths to go study and gain experiences abroad to further enhance the collective knowledge of Malta’s future generations and then attract them back to Malta with quality employment through the new 10 sectors which the PN are promising.
  • The Nationalist Party will also, according to Grech, push for better wages by attracting more quality companies from abroad to further raise the employment bar in Malta.
  • Grech urged nationalist supporters to convince the people that are still unconvinced about who they should vote for as this would make Malta’s alternative political choice stronger against the current Robert Abela administration.
  • He closed by stating “Jien Mieghek Ghal Malta”, to a massive applause by his supporters.

During his speech in the Żurrieq rally, Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech called for Malta’s government to stop sporting events with Russia and the stopping of passport sales.

Through this statement, Grech joins a statement by the South End Core which, in light of the invasion by Russia of Ukraine, called on the Malta Football Association – 1900 to advise UEFA that as an association, they will not accept the Russian under 21 national team in March.

This is due to Malta’s team facing Russia on the 25th of March, but the group said that ‘football is about liv for the game and respect towards each other. There is no place for war.’

Grech said that we need to extend our humanitarian aid to the Ukrainians who might seeking help. He called on the Prime Minister to place Ukraine on the green list and thus accept war refugees. The rally then proceeded to hold a minute of silence for the Ukrainians, followed by a massive applause in support of the war torn country.

Thousands have flocked to political rallies in the respective localities to support their favourite contesting parties. With the Labour Party welcoming people in Naxxar, the Nationalist Party organised their own event in Żurrieq.

On their part, the Labour Party organised a mini musical concert prior to the political rally itself, bringing in musicians, singers and other artists to celebrate with the supporters. People waving Labour banners and the new slogan in favour of Robert Abela joined together in anticipation of the March election.

Malta closes airspace to Russian airlines amid Ukraine invasion

Malta closes airspace to Russian airlines amid Ukraine invasion

Prime Minister Robert Abela announced Sunday that Maltese airspace will be closed to Russian airlines in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

This puts Malta alongside other EU countries which announced similar measures on Sunday. Italy, Sweden, Germany and Belgium, along with the UK, have banned Russian flights into their airspace.

Russia also closed its airspace to flights operated by carriers from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia on Sunday. It had also banned flights from Bulgaria, Poland and the Czech Republic a day earlier and all UK-linked planes on Friday.

This follows several sanctions imposed onto Russia by many countries as they condemn the invasion of Ukraine. However, Malta’s government has so far brushed off demands to halt Maltese passport sales to Russians, arguing that the calls are suggesting that all Russian nationals were criminals.

Robert Abela had stated that being in favour of peace does not mean sowing more division and that not all Russians are by extension of the invasion bad people.
