Why Malta Celebrates Independence Day

Why Malta Celebrates Independence Day
Sep 19 2023 Share

On September 21st every year, our island comes alive with patriotic fervour as Malta commemorates Independence Day. This significant holiday marks the culmination of our country’s long journey towards self-governance and freedom from British colonial rule. Let’s explore the history, traditions, and celebrations that make this day so special for the people of Malta.

Independence

Malta’s history is intertwined with the rise and fall of various empires and colonial powers, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Knights of St. John, and the British Empire. For nearly 160 years, from 1814 to 1964, Malta was under British rule, making its quest for independence a deeply rooted aspiration.

The road to independence was marked by political movements and leaders who tirelessly advocated for self-determination. Key figures such as Dom Mintoff, leader of the Maltese Labour Party, and George Borg Olivier, leader of the Nationalist Party, played pivotal roles in shaping Malta’s destiny. After years of negotiations, Malta achieved its independence on September 21, 1964, becoming a sovereign nation within the British Commonwealth.

The Celebrations Unveiled

Independence Day in Malta is a time of great pride and national unity. The celebrations begin with the ceremonial hoisting of the Maltese flag across the island.

Military parades, cultural performances, and speeches honour Malta’s history and the sacrifices made for independence, all while the streets are adorned in the national colours of red and white. In the evening, the skies light up with spectacular firework displays, casting a brilliant glow over the island.

Community gatherings are a hallmark of the day, where families and friends come together for barbecues, picnics, and festivities. Where are you off to this public holiday?

A Reflection of Resilience

Independence Day in Malta is more than just a day off work or a display of national symbols; it’s a reflection of the Maltese people’s resilience and determination. It’s a day to honour the sacrifices made by generations past and to appreciate the freedom and sovereignty enjoyed today.

Independence Day is a true reminder of Malta’s enduring spirit and its commitment to preserving its hard-won independence for generations to come.

Happy Independence Day!

Grech drew attention to the news that was reported in December 2022, which showed 91% of those who use the Soup Kitchen are Maltese. The Soup Kitchen provides food for 140 persons everyday, whilst also helping those who do not have a roof over their head or any access to electricity.

The Franciscan Friars behind the Soup Kitchen were awarded the 2023 European CItizen’s Prize, after having been nominated by MEP David Casa.

Bernard Grech was joined by MPs and spokespersons Graziella Galea, Albert Buttigieg and Ivan Bartolo.
