80-year-old & 57-year-old with grievous injuries after two separate traffic incidents

An 80-year-old man residing in Ta’ Xbiex has sustained grievous injuries after being hit by a Nissan Qashqai driven by a 39-year-old Gzira resident, the police have reported.

The 80-year-old Englishman was taken to Mater Dei via ambulance where he was certified to have grievous injuries.

In a separate incident which took place in Birkirkara at around 12:15am, a 57-year-old motorcyclist from Attard collided with a Toyota Ractis driven by a 50-year-old Pieta’ resident. The motorcyclist was taken to Mater Dei where he was certified to be suffering grievous injuries.

Police investigations on both cases are currently under way.

Żejtun’s Beland society break national record with first solar-powered & recycled float

During last week’s grand feast celebrations at St. Catherine’s feast in Zejtun, the volunteers at the Beland Musical Society registered a national record with a mechanised float, the first of its kind to operate on solar energy.

With the aim of raising awareness on the environmental impact of village feast, the members of Zejtun’s Beland created the mechanised system, which operates via hydraulics and is made almost completely out of recycled material from previous feasts.

A rechargeable solar battery, which was also repurposed, takes the place of an Internal Combustion Engine. The art piece attempts to symbolise the Beland Band’s journey beyond our shores in the past 30 years.

Maltese swimmer getting thousands of views on TikTok after showing diving skills

A Maltese swimmer with impeccable diving skills is garnering thousands of views on TikTok after posting an 8-second clip of a pristine dive into Malta’s clear blue seas.

The video, taken at St. Peter’s Pool in the south of Malta shows TikTok user @felic80 flawlessly diving into the blue depths with somewhat of an audience watching along. The video has since gained over 31,000 views on TikTok, with a barrage of comments praising the man whilst others hilariously captioning it “Me jumping to conclusions”.

The user had already posted a number of diving clips, with his first one gaining over 12,000 views and the others following.

A summer of hands-on experiences for Heritage Malta student passport holders

Heritage Malta’s young passport holders are in for yet another treat with the launch of the popular Student Passport Summer Programme, which aims to increase accessibility to our cultural heritage among children and young teens.

Starting on Friday, 1st July, and ending on Tuesday, 20th September, the programme includes various fun and educational activities to be held at Heritage Malta’s sites. There will be walking trails, painting, a patchwork workshop, model making, artwork analysis, cloth dying, an introduction to paper conservation, a tour about different types of sea turtles, model making, a hands-on cooking experience, and more.

This year’s summer programme was launched during a press conference at the National Museum of Natural History, to which a class of primary school students was also invited.

Addressing those present. Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, commended Heritage Malta for these initiatives through which youngsters are not only kept active throughout the summer holidays but are also introduced to various aspects of Malta’s history and culture while enjoying themselves in hands-on experiences. He urged Heritage Malta student passport holders to put the passport to good use and visit all sites and museums free of charge.

Heritage Malta’s Chief Executive Officer, Noel Zammit, said that the student summer programme is a perfect example of how Heritage Malta is placing people of all ages at the centre of its mission to make heritage constantly available to everyone, everywhere. The programme also embodies the agency’s constant endeavours to give its visitors a more holistic and exciting experience through innovative and creative means aided by the latest technology.

Vanessa Ciantar, Heritage Malta’s Senior Principal Officer for Education and Outreach, gave an overview of this summer’s activities, which will be held at Heritage Malta museums and sites as well as via virtual platforms. Students of all ages are being catered for. One guardian per child is being invited to attend the activity together with the participant.
