Eight Asiatic lions – four males and four females – have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus at the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad India. The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) confirmed that the lions have contracted an old variant of the virus and is allegedly the first case of lions testing positive. Following PCR tests, it was confirmed that the lions, which were showing mild symptoms, had contracted the virus and was allegedly passed on from the caregivers at the zoo.
CCMB director Rakesh Mishra stated that medical treatment and instructions to the zoo officials on how to care for the animals and make sure there is no transmission to others. The lions are allegedly responding well to treatment. The whole of India is currently experiencing an immense surge of cases, with 20.2 million cases since the pandemic hit along with 222,000 deaths.
