According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), long working hours are having a fatal toll of 745,000 people a year. A British media outlet reported that the first global study of this kind showed that 745,000 people died in 2016 due to stroke and heart disease connected with exaggerated working hours. South East Asian and Western Pacific regions were most affected, with WHO warning that COVID-19 might worsen the impact.
Research showed that working more than 55 hours or more weekly was associated with a 35% higher chance of stroke and 17% higher chance of heart disease fatalities. Almost three quarters of those that passed away as a result of over-working were middle aged or older men, with deaths happening later in life than the actual long hours.
