740kg of cocaine seized in record breaking interception by Malta Customs

The Malta Customs intercepted a record breaking 740kg of cocaine at the Freeport, with their high purity boosting their street value up to €90 and €100 million. Customs Malta reported that a long operation took place which spanned from Monday morning until Tuesday afternoon, with officials stationed at the Freeport Scanning Facility, intercepted and seized the record breaking amount which was found hidden in a 40ft reefer container.

The cargo was en-route from Ecuador to Slovenia with a ‘refrigerated payload of 1,080 boxes of bananas.’ Officials inspected all the boxes and elevated 740 packets hidden in 37 boxes. This latest bust is historic in street value and size.

Tourists without documents to quarantine in four star Corinthia Marina hotel

Tourists who travel to Malta and do not provide the required COVID-19 documentation will be carrying out their quarantine at the Marina Hotel Corinthia Beach Resort in St. George’s Bay. Authorities approved the hotel as a quarantine hotel, with tourists who do not provide the required documents having to pay €120 for a PCR test and €100 for every night spent in accommodation. The accommodation fee is not inclusive of hotel services, including food and drink.

Should a tourist turn out COVID-19 positive, they must pay for the entire stay until they are registered as COVID-19 free. With 200 rooms in the hotel, the tourists will not be allowed to leave their room but will be serviced by staff until allowed to leave by the local authorities. Corinthia Group company secretary Jean-Pierre Schembri informed Times of Malta that the hotel had its doors closed since March 2020 and is not set to cater for these specific tourists.

Looking at sexual assault through statistics

An article published by iNewsMalta reveals the statistical accounts of sexual assault in both Malta and various other countries. The article reveals how 35% of women experience physical or sexual assault, with certain countries registering up to 70%. It was also revealed how in the USA, an American citizen is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds at a rate of 27.3. Only 9% of sexual predators appear in court and an even lesser 3% of these spend a day in jail.

People aged between 12 and 34 are at a greater risk of sexual assault, with the majority of victims being women and majority of assailants being men. Men and boys report less to authorities than women. 2021 statistics from WorldPopulation Review show that the countries with highest rate of sexual assault are South Africa, Botswana and Lesotho. Malta sees 4.70 for every 100,000 reporting sexual assault.

New Zealand marks 100 days without COVID-19 spread in community

New Zealand’s Ministry of Health confirmed that there are currently no new cases of COVID-19 outside the managed isolation and quarantine as of today, 8th June 2021. The 100 day period started from February 28th on a Sunday. New Zealand is close to overcoming the 102 days it surpassed last year before an unknown outbreak resulted in Auckland being placed onto level 3 lockdown.

New Zealand also came up to 100 days last year, making this the second time New Zealand has managed to keep such a streak. New Zealand has registered only 26 deaths overall, with 2,692 total cases and 2,644 recoveries. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has held off receiving her own vaccination, stating she wanted to wait until the rollout reached the general population.
