73 Recruits Complete Basic Training In AFM Passing Out Parade

The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) have announced that 73 recruits from Recruitment Intake 251 have successfully completed their basic military training, marked by a traditional Passing Out Parade at the Ħal Luqa barracks.

The intake originally began with 101 recruits, who enlisted on 13th January 2025 after undergoing a rigorous selection process. Over 21 weeks, the recruits received intensive training in physical fitness, weapons handling, drill, and other essential military skills, fully immersing themselves in military life.

The Passing Out Parade, a ceremony steeped in military tradition, marks the recruits’ transition into fully-fledged soldiers.

During the event, squads marched in both slow and quick time before dignitaries, instructors, and proud family members.

The parade also saw Recruit Janelle Falzon recognised as Best Recruit, receiving personal congratulations from the Commander of the Armed Forces of Malta.

The new soldiers including 10 female recruits will now take up their duties within various AFM units, prepared to serve on land, at sea, or in the air.

Nationalist Party MP Ryan Callus has declared his willingness to step down from Parliament to make way for a new leader, even if that person is not currently a sitting MP. His statement comes just days after Bernard Grech resigned as party leader, with growing calls for European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to return to national politics and take on the role.

Callus said he had reflected carefully on the situation and held extensive discussions with fellow MPs, activists, and grassroots supporters. “It is clear to me, and to most of my colleagues, that the Party urgently needs unity and a renewed consensus,” he stated.

He added that the person best placed to deliver that unity and electoral appeal “might not be a Member of the Maltese Parliament.”

Callus said he would give up his seat if necessary to allow a smooth transition. “This decision was not made lightly; it reflects my deep respect for the will of the people,” he said, pledging full support to whoever party members choose as their next leader.

“I remain fully committed to serving our country in any way I can,” he concluded.
