72.2% less trips were made by Maltese residents in 2020 due to COVID-19

According to a report published by by the National Statistics Office, 196,508 outbound trips by Maltese residents occurred during 2020, marking a 72% drop from the previous year.

This impact on travel was largely due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, with countries imposing various health protocols, quarantine measures and travel restrictions in order to mitigate the spread of the virus.

The report also revealed that Maltese residents took 184,266 air trips and 12,241 sea trips in 2020, a dramatic drop compared to the 677,004 air and 29,793 sea trips in 2019.

Labour Party Deputy Leader calls for changes in outdated drug laws

Following the recent outcry on Malta’s allegedly outdated drug laws, Labour Party Deputy Leader Daniel Micallef took to Facebook to give his two cents about the subject.

Micallef stated that despite the considerable progress made, Malta has much more to take into consideration, rhetorically asking why joint-smokers should go through so many trials and tribulations for a drug which is not on the same level as other substances.

Hospice Malta raise €311,017 during Sunday’s fundraising telethon

Hospice Malta has €311,017 in funds during their fundraising telethon titled ‘Bl-Imħabba Naslu’, which came to a close at midnight on 14th February.

Hospice Malta provides palliative care services to thousands of patients and families suffering from cancer, motor-neurone disease, end-of-life, cardiac, renal and liver diseases amongst others.

No one found breaching COVID-19 regulations in Gozo carnival inspections

The Tourism Ministry has reported that no one was found breaching COVID-19 regulations with regards to accommodation in Gozo over the carnival weekend.

802 accommodations out of the licensed 1,255 were inspected over the weekend, all of which being in line with their licence obligations while 475 food establishments were also cleared.

The Tourism Ministry reported that more than 6,000 inspections were held during February, with 1,885 inspections being carried out in Malta during the carnival weekend.
