Today, October 16th 2024, marks the 7 year anniversary since the assassination of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

In a statement of tribute, Occupy Justice Malta said that today marks 7 years since ‘that Monday afternoon when our country became a place where a journalist was assassinated.  Where a woman was murdered for daring to speak out.  Where one of us was silenced because she was exposing secrets that those in power did not want to be seen.’

‘Daphne was our go-to source of information before her death.  Now she is our inspiration.  The fight for justice for Daphne and her stories continues.’

This marks a day of events in remembrance of the late journalist, with a silent gathering set in Bidnija (where the bombing took place) at 3pm and later a vigil in Valletta at 7pm.

Daphne was most known for political reporting in Malta, known internationally for her investigation of the Panama Papers. But she was also a mother and a wife, a blogger who wrote about her passion for food and an inspiration to many, both then and certainly now.

Mosta Council Applies For 15 Metre Obelisk In Square

The Mosta Local Council has filed for planning permission to construct a 15-meter obelisk in Mosta Square, positioned in front of the iconic rotunda church.

The monument’s base will measure four meters in width.

This application was submitted in August and is currently under review by the Planning Authority.

Former mayor Chris Grech is listed as the project’s architect.

Mosta’s rotunda church, built in the mid-19th century, drew inspiration from Rome’s Pantheon, which similarly features an obelisk.

Historically, the old Mosta parish church, designed by Tommaso Dingli (1591-1666), had a Dejma Cross memorial situated in front of it.

The architect of the current rotunda, Giorgio Grognet de Vassé, originally intended to include an obelisk at the centre of a large church forecourt. However, these plans were scaled down, and the obelisk was never constructed.
