Malta Leads EU in Public Transport Usage for 2022

Malta Leads EU in Public Transport Usage for 2022
Sep 18 2024 Share

In 2022, Malta recorded the highest share of public transport use by coaches, buses, and trolleybuses in the EU, with 15.4% of total passenger kilometres, surpassing Ireland (14.1%) and Hungary (13.0%). This highlights Malta’s commitment to public transport and its efforts to encourage sustainable urban mobility.

Across the European Union, transport by car remained the dominant mode of travel, accounting for 72.2% of total passenger kilometres. However, this marked a decrease of 8.1 percentage points compared to 2021, indicating a shift toward alternative transport options. Air travel experienced a significant rise, making up 13.1% of total passenger kilometres, a 6 percentage point increase from the previous year. Rail transport also saw an uptick, particularly in Austria (11.0%), the Netherlands (10.6%), and Sweden (9.5%).

Malta’s high public transport usage aligns with the goals of European Mobility Week, held annually from 16 to 22 September to promote sustainable urban mobility. While Malta leads in coach and bus transport, it also recognizes the need for continued efforts to reduce reliance on cars and embrace more eco-friendly travel options.
