A recent TikTok published by global sports platform BT Sport shows English former football manager and player Harry Redknapp mock the Maltese national team ahead of a Premier League restart.

Redknapp was discussing how he lost interest in international football, recalling how England win game after game but render little to no results in international tournaments before he took a subtle jab at Malta.

“I’ll be honest with you, I hear the commentator go, we’re playing Malta. He goes, this number 18. He works at the checkout counter during the week at the supermarket. And I think, what am I watching this for?”

The English football veteran goes on to express his enthusiasm towards the Premier League, but his comment wasn’t well-received amongst Maltese football fans, who understand the grit and determination it takes to play at that level locally.

On Thursday, Malta suffered at 2-1 loss at the hands of North Macedonia during the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Yannick Yankam scored in his debuting match as Malta continues its Euro campaign.

Malta suffer narrow defeat against North Macedonia

Mar 23 2023 Share

In the first match of the European Qualifiers Group C, England and North Macedonia took the 3 points with wins over Italy and Malta respectively.

In Skopje, Macedonia, the Maltese team, led for the first time by coach Michele Marcolini, suffered a 2-1 defeat against a strong Macedonian side. Although the first half ended 0-0, North Macedonia showed their strength in the second 45 minutes but this was not enough to achieve a comfortable win. Malta’s goal came from substitute Yannick Yankam, 5 minutes from the end.

On the other hand, at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples, England came out victorious over Italy. Gareth Southgate’s side won thanks to 2 first half goals, in a match were Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, became the all-time leading top scorer of the England national team. Retegui’s goal, close to the hour-mark was not enough to spark a comeback.

The Italian team will now travel to Malta and are scheduled to arrive in the early hours of Friday morning.

They will be playing against our national team, in front of a packed National Stadium in Ta’ Qali, this Sunday at 8:45pm.
