63 Year Old Goalkeeper Returns For Birkirkara Women’s Match

63 Year Old Goalkeeper Returns For Birkirkara Women's Match
Dec 21 2023 Share

A mere three days before turning 63 years old, football veteran Nina Dimech returned for Birkirkara Women’s latest match against Mtarfa FC – and managed to keep a clean sheet!

With her team winning the match with a whopping 13-0 score, Nina made sure that no goals were scored in the net she guarded. This saw Birkirkara consolidate their place at the top of the First Division.

Dimech, reported Replay (Net Television), is a pioneer in local women’s football. She was called back onto the field after international goalkeeper Janice Xuereb was indisposed and Erika Muscat tended to an injury.

Nina had become the oldest player to ever appear in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match all the way back in 2010, playing against Turkey in UEFA Group 5. She was 49 years old at the time, and surpassed MacDonald Taylor Sr. as the oldest player to appear in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

7 Hilarious Moments At Every Maltese Christmas Lunch

7 Hilarious Moments At Every Maltese Christmas Lunch
Dec 20 2023 Share

Ah, the Maltese Christmas lunch—a feast of food, family, and more drama than a soap opera. As we gather around the table, let’s take a lighthearted look at the 7 hilarious moments that are practically tradition at every Maltese holiday gathering.

Nanna’s Lasagna Dilemma: The battle of the lasagnas begins, with everyone claiming their Nanna’s version is the best. Forget the turkey; the real competition is in the layers of pasta, sauce, and cheese. Forget about centuries-old recipes; Nanna’s lasagna secrets are more guarded than Area 51.

Sofa Snoozing – The Uncle Edition: As the post-lunch lethargy sets in, one of the older uncles or aunts inevitably succumbs to the irresistible call of the comfy sofa. It’s like clockwork. The trick is to navigate around them quietly, so as not to wake the slumbering giant and risk missing out on a good seat for the annual post-meal card game.

The Great Debate (On Everything But Christmas): Forget peace on earth; at Maltese Christmas lunches, we’re aiming for heated shouting matches on unrelated topics. Whether it’s politics, football, or the proper way to make a ħobża biż-żejt, someone is bound to take a passionate stance, ensuring that the decibel level matches the festive decorations.

Nanna Moneybags: Watch in awe as Nanna whips out €10 notes faster than a magician pulling rabbits out of a hat. Forgot to buy presents? No problem. Her wallet is a bottomless pit of generosity, and she’s here to ensure that everyone gets a little extra Christmas cheer, even if it’s in monetary form.

The Responsible Older Cousin: While the adults engage in heated debates and Nanna makes it rain, there’s always that one older cousin who takes charge of the kids. Armed with board games, crayons, and an unyielding dedication to keeping the little ones entertained, they become the unsung heroes of the family gathering.

The Refusal to Eat Saga: Every family has that one member who insists on starting a dramatic scene by refusing to eat. Whether it’s a newfound dedication to a diet or an unspoken protest against the lasagna verdict, their moment of culinary rebellion adds an extra dash of spice to the festive proceedings.

The Dreaded “When Are You Bringing a Partner?” Inquiry: Finally, as dessert plates are cleared away, brace yourself for the inevitable question that echoes through generations: “When are you going to bring a partner to Christmas lunch?” Cue nervous laughter and awkward attempts to change the subject as the interrogation begins.

Ah, the joys of a Maltese Christmas lunch—where the lasagna is legendary, the debates are heated, and the only thing more unpredictable than the weather is the family dynamics. May your holidays be filled with laughter, love, and a touch of festive chaos!

Happy Christmas!
