6 Year Old Boy Drowns In Naxxar Pool

Yesterday, at around 1730hrs, police were informed that their assistance was needed in Triq San Ġwann, Naxxar.

Police convened immediately on site and preliminary investigations showed that a 6 year old boy was out in the family fields with his relatives and wandered off.

His relatives began the search shortly after and contacted the police. Various sections of the force were informed and began to search in the areas in the vicinity.

Through the use of a drone, the boy was located in the pool of a different residence and unconscious. He was given preliminary aid by police on site and then by a medical team.

The boy was transported to Mater Dei Hospital but was unfortunately pronounced deceased a while after.

Investigations are ongoing and an inquiry has been opened.

Road Infrastructure Works In Victoria, Gozo Underway

Road infrastructure in Gozo continues to improve, with several projects currently underway in Victoria. Final works are being completed on the Sports and Aquatic Pavilion, which is set to open gradually to the public in the coming weeks.

Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri, visited key sites including Triq l-Ewropa, where resurfacing has begun in front of the Pavilion. He explained that this area has seen upgrades to underground services and that a broader programme is in place to improve roads that serve the town centre. Work is also progressing on major bypasses including Triq l-Imgħallem, Triq ta’ Wara s-Sur and Triq Ġorġ Pisani, aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Victoria and creating alternative routes to Marsalforn.

In the days ahead, more work will continue on main roads to improve infrastructure and utilities. Minister Camilleri also announced the completion of Triq Santa Dminka, which has been fully resurfaced, signposted and reopened to traffic. Meanwhile, work has begun on Triq Arturo Mercieca and continues on Triq Ġorġ Pisani.

The Minister highlighted that these projects reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing quality of life in Gozo. The Ministry remains focused on delivering safer, modern and sustainable roads across the island.

Local Record For Biggest Maltese Fira Baked In Traditional Oven

The Malta Records was present yesterday in Nadur, Gozo, for the establishment of a new national record in the Maltese Islands.

The largest Maltese ftira, baked in a traditional Maltese oven, measured 1.80 metres in length and 1.80 metres in width.

This record was set by Grech’s Bakery, Nadur, during the Agrarian and Artisan Exhibition organised by the Nadur Local Council in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo and Planning.

Pilot BCRS Home Collection In 20 Localities By July 1st

A new government pilot scheme is set to begin on 1 July, offering home collection of plastic beverage bottles for elderly residents and individuals with a blue badge in 20 localities.

The initiative will use vehicles equipped with machines that accept bottles and issue vouchers, aiming to make participation in the Beverage Container Refund Scheme (BCRS) more accessible for those who may face mobility challenges.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Robert Abela during a public discussion in Ħ’Attard. He stated that the service is intended to reduce the inconvenience of travelling to existing BCRS machines, particularly for older individuals.

According to Abela, the pilot responds to positive public uptake of the current deposit-return system.

In the same event, the Prime Minister also outlined several environmental measures currently underway. These include infrastructure for shore-to-ship power in major ports, a waste-to-energy project, and the promotion of solar panel installations and electric vehicles.

He also noted the upcoming introduction of a fast ferry service from Buġibba, intended to offer an alternative transport route between the islands.

In relation to construction, new building codes are reportedly being drafted, and schemes remain in place to support the restoration of older properties rather than new development.
