5th Edition Of Flames Across The Meadows A Success

5th Edition Of Flames Across The Meadows A Success
Jul 11 2023 Share

The fifth edition of the ‘Flames Across the Meadows’ proved to be yet another spectacular success as fireworks lit up Kerċem, Gozo over the past weekend.

The event was organised by the ‘Għaqda tan-Nar Kerċem’, and saw the night sky over Gozo being lit up with the pyrotechnical skills the islands are known to celebrate with, especially over the summer period.

The fireworks were accompanied by the construction of a bridge to which the fireworks served as backdrop, as a ship moved through a raising bridge with music to accompany it.

If this isn’t a testament to the Maltese’s ability to celebrate in style, whilst keeping a core traditional aspect of the island alive, we don’t know what is!

EuroPride Dancer Addresses Kids Celebrating Pride

EuroPride Dancer Addresses Kids Celebrating Pride
Jul 11 2023 Share

Taking to social media, local dancer and choreographer who led the EuroPride Valletta 2023 Flashmob Event addressed the controversy which seemed to have struck social media over kids being involved in the event.

‘Not gonna lie – I literally didn’t even read all the comments coz it’s a waste of time but stopped at the first “let the kids be kids” comment’, wrote Luke Brincat.

‘If they want to play with dolls instead of toy cars; let them be kids.

If they want to become a dancer instead of a footballer; let them be kids.

If they want to watch Batman instead of Barbie; let them be kids.

If they want to wear pants instead of a dress; let them be kids.’

‘If they are excited and willing to be part of a PRIDE event flashmob full of color , vibrancy and acceptance ; respect , joy , entertainment & education ; LET THEM BE KIDS!’

‘Why does a queer person have to reveal their gender when they’re older? Did you have to advise and reassure your mother that you were straight when you got older’, he asked.

‘Why is it the non queer people that have to create this division between genders? … when in reality that video is pure proof that PRIDE is all about acceptance regardless of gender; inclusivity – and not a “street party for the gays” as some may still believe.’

‘So before commenting “I’ve never been celebrated for being straight” it’s because you don’t need a celebration … you weren’t held back from being yourself for years and years , living in fear of what the outcome of that might be.’

‘I say all this in an educative and respectful manner – each to his own .. but don’t put your own insecurities and fears onto the kids; LET THEM BE KIDS’.

This came after various comments and posts suggested that kids being involved in the event was uncalled for (or worse, for some). Many, however, pointed out that the event wasn’t inherently inappropriate just because it was a celebration of the LGBTIQ+ community, with kids enjoying the event as any other.

MP Robert Cutajar Raises €5,800 For Charitable Organisations

Jul 11 2023 Share

MP Robert Cutajar organised an auction of football memorabilia and managed to raise €5,800 for charitable organisations in Malta. The funds were raised during the past few months and donated to Puttinu Cares, Malta Trust Foundation, Hospice Malta, Step Up for Parkinsons, and other deserving causes.

The auctioned items included several notable pieces of football memorabilia. Among them was an Inter Champions League shirt belonging to Calhanoglu, a Barcelona Futsal team shirt and ball, Michael Mifsud’s Kaiserslautern shirt, a Tottenham Hotspur signed emblem, an Ireland international shirt, a Carmel Busuttil Sliema Wanderers shirt, and a Ronnie Cocks Sliema Wanderers shirt.

It’s interesting to note that the Tottenham Hotspur memorabilia was taken by Dr. Andrew Deaner. Dr. Deaner is a cardiologist known for his involvement in saving the life of international player Fabrice Muamba. In 2012, Muamba collapsed during an F.A Cup game against Tottenham, and Dr. Deaner rushed onto the field to assist the doctors in their efforts. Dr. Deaner had actually attended the match because he was given a spare ticket by his nephew, who couldn’t go.

On another note, Michael Mifsud, a Maltese football legend and the all-time top scorer for the Maltese national team, had started his career abroad with Kaiserslautern. So, his auctioned shirt holds special significance. Carmel Busuttil and Ronnie Cocks are also renowned footballing legends in Malta, having achieved numerous honours during their time with Sliema Wanderers.

Some of these memorabilia were signed by all of the Maltese Members of Parliament after participating in a sporting event to raise funds for charity.

Speaking to Malta Daily, PN Whip Robert Cutajar, explained that he will be auctioning more memorabilia in the coming weeks to raise more funds for other local charity organisation, as he intends to support worthy causes with the help of memorabilia collectors and football fans around the islands.
