
The Cleaning and Maintenance Division (CMD) resolved 96% of reported cases in 2024, showcasing its dedication to maintaining cleanliness across Malta and Gozo.
The division collected a staggering 57,600 tonnes of waste, including 46,000 tonnes of construction debris. Notably, 40,000 tonnes were cleared from the Motorsports Centre to prepare for new projects.
This success stemmed from an €11 million investment in machinery and the tireless efforts of CMD staff. Over the year, CMD handled 20,218 reports of littering and maintenance issues.

Most reports were submitted via the Clean & Upkeep app (10,945), phone (6,191), and email (2,422).
The Xummiemu educational campaign significantly boosted public participation, with app downloads rising from 842 before the campaign to 3,216 after its launch. Minister Miriam Dalli praised the teamwork and public engagement, emphasising that cleanliness is essential to environmental awareness.
Parliamentary Secretary Glenn Bedingfield reaffirmed the government’s commitment to cleanliness, announcing plans to leverage artificial intelligence for future initiatives.
He highlighted the direct link between cleanliness and quality of life, stressing the role of citizens in maintaining public spaces.
