50% of Maltese adult population vaccinated

The Maltese vaccination rollout has been effectively administering jabs to Malta’s population, so much so that 50% of the adult population is now vaccinated. 311,559 vaccines, of which 99,574 are second doses, have been administer as of yesterday Sunday 25th April 2021. The rollout has immensely contributed to a decrease in daily cases, deaths and even easing the pressure in Malta’s health care system. Malta currently utilises Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson (which was approved last week) and AstraZeneca.

The rollout has also worked closely with the health restrictions which are currently being eased. Caution is still however immensely important and abiding by the measures is of utmost importance. This news also places Malta in very close proximity with the UK’s vaccination rollout as it edges closer to overtaking it.

Comino boat trip causes social media concern

Comino boat party breaks several COVID-19 health restrictions

A seemingly-crowded boat in Comino’s Blue Lagoon has been spotted and made known publicly through photos emerging on social media. The organisation has contacted MaltaDaily and stated that they were abiding by the COVID-19 regulations and keeping the required safe distance and number of people in groups. The number of people which could be in groups together went up to four just today, being groups of two as of last week unless the people involved were from the same household.

Manchester United returning to Malta

Replay have reported that one of the most followed football clubs in Malta, Manchester United will be returning to Malta for a training camp. The Red Devils have already been in Malta 21 years ago, and their return could also be accompanied by a match against one of Malta’s Premier League clubs. Manchester United had already played against Birkirkara FC back in 2000, winning with a score of 5-1.

Replay stated that this news is still set to be confirmed but the information will be made official in the coming days. VisitMalta has struck a deal with the English team in November 2019. The deal was, as stated by the Tourism Minister, was to promote Malta through the popular team, with the agreement costing around €20 million over the period of three years. This news is surely to excite Manchester fans who could not travel due to COVID-19 to watch them play.

30% of arrivals do not present negative COVID-19 certificates

Despite the COVID-19 certificate being mandatory, Times of Malta has learned that around one third of people travelling to Malta do not present a negative COVID-19 certificate. With all countries on Amber List, travellers are required to produce negative swab tests which were taken up to 72 hours before travel. The travellers who do not presented the certificate are therefore tested upon arrival for free.

Airport sources revealed that due to the test being free upon arrival, then number of tourists arriving in Malta without the certificate is increasing. Superintendent for Health Charmaine Gauci stated that the majority are presenting said certificate, but the country was not considering introducing fees for arrival tests, even though some countries have done so. The Superintendent said that Malta will still offer the test for free because it helps Malta keep the COVID-19 situation under control.
