Four Maltese men and one Maltese woman were arrested after they assaulted two police officers during their duty in Triq il-Kbira San Ġużepp, Ħamrun over the weekend.
The officers were assaulted after they fined an illegally parked car.
It was at that point that a number of persons exited an establishment and began arguing with police.
Despite being given orders to maintain public order and cooperation, the persons assaulted the officers, forcing the latter to use pepper spray and taser.
More police arrived on site and controlled the situation. A 42 year old woman and two men, aged 46 and 44, were arrested on site. Investigations also showed that two other persons had fled the scene – two men aged 23 and 33.
They were identified and arrested in their respective residences.
A medical team was called on site and transported two police officers to Mater Dei. One was certified as having suffered grievous injuries and another suffered light injuries.
Investigations are ongoing.
