5 more COVID deaths take death toll up to 22

The Health Ministry has announced that five more people have died while positive with COVID-19. 

A 76-year-old man who tested positive on 6th November and died at the Gozo General Hospital on Monday.

A 75-year-old woman who tested positive on 11th November and died at the Good Samaritan facility on Monday. 

An 83-year-old man who tested positive on 2nd November and died at the Good Samaritan Facility on Tuesday.

An 82-year-old man and an 88-year-old man who tested positive on 11th and 16th November respectively and died at Mater Dei on Tuesday.

Malta currently stands at 122 COVID-19 related deaths.

EU secures COVID-19 vaccine through Moderna contract

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission has announced that a contract has been secured with pharmaceutical company Moderna to assure the delivery of a COVID-19 vaccine to citizens of the European Union.

The EU will buy 160 million doses of the vaccine, which was last found to be 94.5% effective and, once found to be completely safe and effective, will be delivered to all member states of the EU on a pro-rata basis.

Former footballers arrested in connection with fuel smuggling ring

Former Maltese footballers Darren Debono and Jeffrey Chetcuti, amongst others, have been arrested in connection with a large-scale international fuel-smuggling ring.

Accountant Chris Baldacchino and criminal lawyer Arthur Azzopardi were also arrested and interrogated for a suspected involvement in money-laundering activities. Debono and Chetcuti’s arrest result from a number of anti-smuggling raids held overnight.

The Times of Malta and The Daphne Project had reported Malta’s placement in the centre of a multi-million dollar fuel-smuggling ring, where stolen fuel from Libya is sold and traded from Maltese storage facilities.

Haley Bugeja named Atlas Youth Athlete of the month

Football starlet Haley Bugeja continues to make the headlines as she receives the title of ‘Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month’ for October 2020. Bugeja has made quite a name for herself during her time at US Sassuolo in the Italian Serie A Femminile.

The 16-year-old is expected to join Malta’s national team for the UEFA Women’s EURO Qualifiers for two games against Georgia and Israel on the 26th of November and 1st December respectively.
