More than 4,000 people in Malta have backed a European pro-choice petition calling for abortion access across all EU member states.

The petition, part of an EU-wide initiative, collected 4,410 digital signatures from Malta, along with additional paper submissions — pushing the country past its required threshold of 4,230 signatures.

‘As the state with the most restrictive laws, we sent an important message. We now await tangible action from the European Commission’, wrote Doctors for Choice Malta.
This national quota is based on the number of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) each country has, which correlates with population size.
With just hours to go before the petition closed, Malta was still short of its target. But a final coordinated push from activists saw the country not only meet the quota but exceed it.
The surge in last-minute support marked a significant moment for local pro-choice advocates.

The result triggered strong reactions from activists and some political figures, who welcomed the milestone, including former MEP Cyrus Engerer.
Campaigners described the outcome as a clear signal that attitudes are shifting and that more Maltese citizens are willing to openly back change at the European level.
