4 Men Arrested In Marsa Garage For Drug Trafficking

After days of investigations and observations, at around 1030hrs, police, with the collaborative effort of other sections of the corps, surrounded a garage in Triq is-Serkin, Marsa, due to it being allegedly used in drug trafficking.

During the operation, four men were arrested: a 19 year old and a 29 year old residents of Marsa, a Qrendi resident aged 26 years old and a 39 year old resident of Bormla.

Searches on the location yielded 100 packets of synthetic drugs, 50 packets of suspected cocaine and 50 packets of suspected heroin, along with around €3,000 in cash.

An inquiry has been opened and investigations are ongoing.

The Ministry for Gozo has announced the relaunch of its financial assistance scheme for the second year, offering support to individuals and organizations renting spaces to construct floats or grotesque masks for the Gozo Regional Carnival 2026.

Minister Clint Camilleri highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “The Gozo Carnival is a cornerstone of our cultural identity, drawing larger audiences each year from both Malta and abroad.

This scheme not only celebrates this vibrant tradition but also provides a direct and indirect boost to the local economy.”

Eligible applicants can receive funding of up to €25,000 annually for float construction or €10,000 for grotesque mask production, which will cover rental costs. To qualify, premises must be rented for at least one year, with the option to extend on an annual basis.

“This program reinforces our dedication to safeguarding cultural heritage while encouraging greater involvement in the Carnival.

It provides talented individuals with the resources they need to showcase their creativity and continue offering the community an unforgettable experience,” Minister Camilleri added.

Applications for the scheme are open for one month and can be submitted online at https://gozo.gov.mt/ or in person at the Cultural Heritage Directorate, 11 Triq it-Telgħa tal-Kastell, Rabat, Gozo.

Interested applicants are advised to review the guidelines and eligibility criteria available on the website. A Ministry-appointed selection board will evaluate submissions to ensure compliance with the scheme’s requirements.

Written by Peppi Azzopardi and with music by Philip Vella, the song appeals to the listener to try and relate to the inmates’ experiences.

A new collective agreement signed today will improve working conditions for over 260 clerical employees within Malta and Gozo’s Local and Regional Councils.

The agreement, reached between the Association of Local Councils and the Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin (UĦM), introduces a range of enhancements designed to support workers and encourage career growth.

The signing ceremony was attended by Minister for National Heritage, Arts, and Local Government Owen Bonnici, Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli, Ministry Permanent Secretary Kevin Mahoney, and Joyce Cassar, Permanent Secretary from the Office of the Prime Minister.

This agreement, developed in collaboration with the Local Government Division and the Industrial Relations Section, strengthens financial packages, improves employment terms, and creates more opportunities for training and career advancement.

It also highlights the essential role of clerical staff in providing services to communities across Malta and Gozo while offering pathways for individuals interested in pursuing careers in local government.

Minister Bonnici praised the collaborative efforts behind the agreement and underscored key benefits, including salary increases and 10 cultural leave days per year for employees representing Malta at cultural events.

Special leave for participation in sporting events under SportMalta schemes, indefinite contracts for new employees, and improved allowances and performance bonuses are also included.

Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli celebrated the agreement as a step forward for clerical staff, offering both financial improvements and professional development opportunities.

She expressed gratitude to council employees for their invaluable contributions and recognised the teamwork that brought the agreement to fruition.
