Maltese people among least likely to be stopped by police in EU

According to research by the Fundamental Rights Agency, people in Malta are among the least likely in the EU to be stopped by police in the streets. Austria tops the poll, with Malta and Romania both ranking second lowest in terms of people reporting being stopped by officers. The research, published Tuesday, shows that ethnic minorities are usually stopped more frequently across the EU, but this is not the case in Malta.

The research showed that despite Sub-Saharan Africans being more likely to report perceiving police as disrespectful, 5% of Sub-Saharan Africans and descendants in Malta report being stopped, compared to the general population’s 7%. Across the EU, 80% of the general population say police treated them respectfully, but only 46% of minorities say so.

Malta experiences a similar situation with only four percent of Malta’s general population reporting the police were being disrespectful, but 35% of Sub-Saharan Africans having disrespectful encounters. Comparing the numbers to the EU average, fewer Maltese people perceive police as respectful. Across the EU, 65% perceived police to be respectful, whereas in Malta the statistic drops to 58%.

PN vows to build motorsport track without destroying land

Opposition leader Bernard Grech stated that the Nationalist Party is determined to give an absolute priority to the sports sector. Grech highlighted motorsport which draws in a lot of passionate practitioners, and stated that the promise to build a new track will be fulfilled. Grech stated that the track will be built without the destruction of any precious land.

Grech also stated that the PN has already identified the potential area as to where this project could take place and will not let any commercial agenda to steal it away and prevent the project form happening. The Opposition Leader said that motorsport practitioners deserve to have a place where to practice this sport as everyone has their own form of passion and relaxation.

PN proposal to treat drug addicted inmates outside prison

PN MP Beppe Fenech Adami is pushing for a reform to treat inmates addicted to drugs outside prison. He pointed out that only 2% of inmates are treated for the addiction outside prison, even though statistics show that the number of addicts far supersedes this. Among a set of nine proposals, the PN is proposing rehabilitation programmes, such as Caritas’ Prison Inmate Programme.

Fenech Adami highlighted that having inmates who finish their sentences as addicts is not rehabilitation. Despite claims that widespread drug use in the prison has been eradicated, the PN, according to Adami, is aiming to retain the prisoners dignity.

The proposals also highlight the overpopulation problem of the prison, stating that the structure should be extended to accommodate inmates in more humane conditions. PN will also be pushing for the repatriating of foreign inmates back to the country of origin.
