4 deaths, 15 in ITU and 4,000 currently in quarantine

Follow the Superintendent for Public Health Charmaine Gauci press briefing at 12:30, it was revealed that out of the 194 patients being treated for COVID-19 at Mater Dei, 15 of them are currently in the Intensive Care Unit.

Along with the report of 4,000 people currently in quarantine, 4 more COVID-related deaths were revealed, taking the death toll up to 132.

This follows Chris Fearne’s news that bars and clubs will remain closed for the rest of the year in order to control the spread of COVID-19 during the holiday period.

Malta has registered 96 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 3,049 swab tests, while 132 patients have recovered. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

Details on new active cases will be given by Prof Charmaine Gauci during a press briefing at 12:30 which will be streamed on saħħa.

To date, Malta has registered 9,501 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 7,297 have recovered, 128 died and 2,076 are still active.

€750,000 of drugs seized in Marscascala

The Malta Police Force have seized 55 kilos of cannabis with a street value €750,000 from a fishing boat in Marscascala.

Three Italian men were arrested following the discovery of the drugs, with one of them jumping into the sea prior to being apprehended.

The men’s private homes were also searched, resulting in the discover of some cannabis plans a drug suspected to be cocaine.

Bars will remain closed for the rest of the year, at the very least

Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne has announced that bars and clubs will remain closed until New Year’s Day at the very least, following the announcement of extended closure for establishments.

Fearne stated that this was far from an easy decision, appealing for the public to remain responsible and cooperative in the organisation of gatherings during the festive season.

He went on to say that, while all deaths are tragedies, only 4% of tests in Malta result as positive, with countries like Czechia and Poland having percentages of 30% and 45% respectively.
