It was revealed by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri that a total of 31 people were penalised for using cannabis in public spaces since the beginning of 2022.
Answering a parliamentary question tabled by Nationalist MP Albert Buttigieg, Camilleri revealed that the youngest of those penalised was 16 years old.
Buttigieg asked for information about the number caught in specific localities he mentioned, with Camilleri revealing that 19 of the cases were found in Paceville, Sliema, Marsalforn, Valletta and Marsascala.
The nationalities of the persons varied, some where Maltese whilst others hailed from Germany, the UK, Nigeria, Gambia, Somalia and Mali.
In 2022, 9 cases were reported in 2022 and 1 was reported in 2023. 3 of these cases involved Somali and 3 others involved Gambian nationals. There were also single individuals from Germany, Mali, Nigeria and the UK.
The ages of the aforementioned varied between 23 as the youngest and 39 as the oldest. Details for the entire 31 cohort was not asked for.
It was also revealed that no one was caught driving under the influence of cannabis during that same time period.
