Local vegetables found doused in banned pesticide

Local vegetables found doused in banned pesticide
May 19 2021 Share

A new report has discovered a banned pesticide on fruit and vegetables in Malta. The pesticide chlorpyrifos was banned due to health concerns as it could pose neuro-developmental impairment in foetuses and children. A EU food safety agency published the report saying that the insecticide was detected during scientific tests on products grown and sold in 2019 in Malta. The insecticide was used in Malta since 1966 on a variety of products.

A study in 2019 stated that it is still unknown at which point the pesticide becomes toxic. The government banned it soon after. European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) stated that legal action had to be taken against a group of unnamed Maltese farmers following a failure of routine pesticide screening. Around 200 samples from 20 different food types were tested for the pesticide, with those containing the pesticide identified as all locally produced.

Nationalist MP proposes bonuses for front-liners from COVID-19 fines

Nationalist MP proposes bonuses for front-liners from COVID-19 fines
May 19 2021 Share

Nationalist MP Hermann Shiavone has pointed out on Facebook that health front-liners working with to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic should receive bonuses from all the fines issued out to regulation breaches. Enforcement authorities have allegedly gathered up around €317,460 from mask fines alone in 2021. MP Schiavone stated that the money should be put to good use, stating the government should consider handing out bonuses to all front-liners.

All health workers and front-liners have been struggling for well over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the vaccination rollout and restrictions bringing down total cases and pressure on medical system, the battle is still far from over, with workers still sacrificing a lot of their time and energy to help the country mitigate the virus.
