The highly anticipated second instalment of the National Pest Management Conference, organised by The Exterminator in collaboration with Orkin, has once again delivered a wealth of crucial insights into pest control strategies for the Maltese Islands. This was held on the 24/25 February. Led by Dr. Ronald Harrison and Arnold Sciberras, the two-day event focused on two major groups of pests that cause significant damage locally—cockroaches and rodents.
Day One: Cockroach Species of Malta
The first day of the conference was dedicated to understanding the various cockroach species found in Malta. Experts delved into their behaviour, survival mechanisms, new species and the challenges they pose to public health and hygiene. Attendees were given an in-depth look at identification techniques, prevention methods, and the latest innovations in pest control to combat these resilient insects.
Day Two: The Rodent Problem
The second day shifted focus to rodents, another persistent issue in Malta. The discussions covered local rodent species, their impact on agriculture, infrastructure, and public health, as well as the most effective control measures. A special highlight of the day was a partial exhibition from Arnold Sciberras ’ extensive entomological and Mammalia collection, showcasing specimens from previous years that provided valuable historical and scientific insights.
Beyond Cockroaches and Rodents
While cockroaches and rodents were the primary focus, the conference also explored other pest species that pose risks to Malta’s ecosystem, businesses, and homes. Participants had the opportunity to engage in discussions about evolving pest control methods, regulatory updates, and sustainable approaches to long-term pest management.
With expert knowledge, real-world case studies, and practical solutions shared over the course of two days, the conference reinforced the importance of proactive pest control in safeguarding public health and property.
As the field of pest management continues to evolve, The Exterminator and Orkin remain committed to educating professionals and the public on the best strategies to tackle Malta’s pest challenges.
