Progress on Marsalforn Breakwater Project

Sep 26 2024 Share

The Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri, has announced significant advancements in the Marsalforn Breakwater project.

Over the past few months, the project has been making steady progress, particularly with the completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study, as mandated by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).

Minister Camilleri revealed that the ERA plans to initiate a consultation process in the coming weeks, lasting one month. This will allow interested parties to review and analyze the prepared document and contribute their feedback.

The chosen design for the project has already been evaluated and approved by the Local Council of Żebbuġ, with an emphasis on achieving two key objectives: safeguarding the beach from storm damage and ensuring minimal visual impact.

During his address, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment not to transform Marsalforn into a yacht marina or engage in any related maritime activities. This position aligns with the agreement reached with the Local Council of Żebbuġ, which oversees Marsalforn beach.

“This is a holistic project, part of the master plan for Marsalforn, which will see the beach expand once the breakwater is completed. The approved design will ensure that circulation in the bay remains natural, allowing this popular beach to be enjoyed by all visitors,” stated Minister Camilleri.

Joseph Cutajar, the Director of Eco-Gozo, is leading the presentation for this project. He also received a technical overview from the architect in charge, Frank Muscat, highlighting the collaborative efforts behind the initiative.

MEP Peter Agius Announces Grant To Aid Maltese Language

Sep 26 2024 Share

Maltese MEP Peter Agius has announced a European Parliament grant given to aid the Maltese language, specifically in official matters such as parliament meetings.

The Nationalist MEP stated that “Maltese is the mother tongue of our nation and a vital part of our identity as Maltese people; therefore, it is our duty to defend it within Europe,”

Agius remarked that he is fully committed to the cause and even started working on it once he got elected, meeting Director-General for Interpretation at the European Parliament, Agnieskia Walter-Drop.

In these meetings, Peter Agius made it absolutely clear that the European Parliament must also speak Maltese, allowing Maltese MEPs to speak in their native language.

This includes a recently approved €40,000 special grant from the European Parliament to the University of Malta, aimed at supporting the training of new Maltese interpreters.

In addition, specialized training programs have been set up in Brussels to equip Maltese individuals for careers in interpretation.

Peter Agius concluded that “on this European Day of Languages, we must recognize that if Europe does not speak the language of its peoples, it will have no voice”.
