2 Persons Injured In Birżebbuġa Traffic Accident

Yesterday, at around 1815hrs, police were informed that their assistance was needed in Triq Ħal Far, Birżebbuġa.

Police convened immediately on site and found that an accident between a Toyota Aygo X driven by a 34 year old woman from SIġġiewi and a Ford Transit van driven by a 22 year old Greek man resident of Wied il-Għajn had taken place.

A 56 year old woman resident of Birgu was also riding passenger in the Toyota vehicle.

The two women were given medical aid and transported to Mater Dei Hospital. Later on, the passenger was certified as having suffered light injuries whereas the driver was certified to have suffered grievous injuries.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Nest 2 in Golden Bay, after having been translocated from Riviera, has successfully joined in celebrations of producing new hatchlings.

‘Over the past 5 days, we had signs that the pipping process had started, and it was last night just past 9pm when we observed the official sign that the hatchlings for Nest 2 were about to emerge’, explained Wildlife Rescue Team Malta.

‘A total of 35 hatchlings made their way to the sea over a period of 3 hours. The nest will continue to be monitored over the next few nights.’

‘Nest 2 was laid on Monday 1st July, with the hatching happening in the late hours of Day 50.’

The nest was translocated to give it a better chance of survival. And sure enough, the following day, Riviera was severely impacted by a storm and flooded.

Team Malta For Paris 2024 Paralympic Games Revealed

The Malta Paralympic Committee (MPC) announced that Malta will be represented by two athletes at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games: Maja Theuma in Para swimming and Antonio Flores in Para athletics.

Maja Theuma, 24, swims with Exiles SC and has over six years of competitive experience. She holds national records in various freestyle and backstroke events and will compete in the 50m freestyle S6 event on 29 August.

Maja is also chair of the MPC Para Athletes’ Council and a strong advocate for Paralympic sports.

Antonio Flores, 34, a long-time Para athlete with Zurrieq Wolves Athletics Club, has over 15 years of experience.

After competing in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, he underwent an amputation in 2017. Antonio will compete in the 100m and 200m T64 events on 1 and 7 September.

MPC Secretary General, Dr. Julian Bajada, highlighted that the athletes are prepared for the Games, with a goal of achieving personal bests.

He emphasised the Games’ broader impact on the local Paralympic movement, which has grown significantly between Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. The team, coached by Edward Caruana Dingli and supported by sponsors like Hudson’s Nike brand, is set for the Games, starting with the Opening Ceremony on 28 August.

Ukrainian Man Loses His Life In Dwejra Bay

A 29-year-old Ukrainian man tragically lost his life after encountering difficulties while swimming. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM, when the police were notified that assistance was needed at Dwejra Bay, located in the limits of San Lawrenz, Gozo.

The police promptly arrived at the scene, where individuals in the area pointed out the last known location where the man was seen in the water.

Immediately, the assistance of the Civil Protection Department and the Armed Forces of Malta was requested, and they began search operations.

After approximately three hours, a body was spotted in the water, recovered, and brought ashore at the Port of Mġarr. It was confirmed to be the same man.

Magistrate Dr. Simone Grech LL.D was informed of the case and has initiated an inquiry, while the police continue their investigations into the incident.
