Two Maltese athletes shattered five national records over the weekend while competing in top-tier athletics events in the United States.
Rachela Pace delivered standout performances at the American Outdoor Championships in Charlotte, setting new national records in both the long jump and triple jump.
Competing for the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), the 21-year-old leapt 6.48m in the long jump to claim silver and soared 13.41m in the triple jump to take gold.
These results not only added to her growing list of national records but also secured her qualification for the upcoming European U23 Athletics Championships in Bergen, Norway.
Already a multiple national title holder, Pace was recently named a 2024 NCAA All-American, a prestigious honour awarded to top collegiate athletes in the US.
Meanwhile, Clare McNamara made her mark at the Big Ten Championships in Eugene. She broke three national records—throwing 14.67m in the shot put, 51.54m in the javelin, and setting a new Maltese heptathlon record with 4,907 points, finishing eighth overall.
Back home, Malta’s rising stars will soon compete in the National Youth Championships at Marsa athletics stadium. The event is seen as a crucial stepping stone ahead of the upcoming Games of the Small States of Europe in Andorra.
