Taking to social media, marine biologist Alan Deidun shared underwater footage of the first time seagrass meadows in local waters are being attempted at restoration.

‘This is the result of a fruitful collaboration between the MEDSEA Foundation, the Oceanography Malta Research Group (OMRG) of the Department of the Geosciences of the University of Malta and the Environmental Resources Authority (ERA).’

‘Around 1500 Posidonia oceanica shoots sourced from local waters were used to replant a footprint of 100 metres squared of seabed.’

The site is being regularly monitored to assess the success of such a pilot study, Deidun explained.

In his opening address, Minister for Justice and Construction Sector Reform Jonathan Attard welcomed delegates and highlighted the importance of the IAP as a platform for discussing the evolving challenges in the legal sector. He emphasized the value of exchanging ideas to improve the work of prosecutors and strengthen judicial integrity.

Minister Attard also outlined Malta’s advancements in prosecution, including the establishment of the State Attorney’s Office in 2019, which has streamlined legal proceedings and improved the handling of serious criminal cases. He noted that the number of prosecutors has increased from 18 in 2019 to 70 by September 2024. Ongoing reforms in the Justice sector, such as the creation of assigned magistrates and planned procedural improvements, were also highlighted.

The Great Harbour Regeneration Corporation (GHRC) will begin the regeneration of the Marina Garden in the coming weeks, following the completion of the Xatt tal-Pietà project. Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Regeneration of the Great Port, Miriam Dalli, and GHRC CEO, Gino Cauchi, shared the plans during a visit to the site.

The Xatt tal Pietà project involved nearly a kilometre of upgraded promenade with new lighting, railings, and additional green spaces, benefiting both pedestrians and cyclists.

The upcoming Marina Garden regeneration will cover 4,400 m², with new pathways, fountain repairs, and enhanced amenities like benches and lighting. The improvements aim to create better open spaces and enhance the area’s beauty and functionality.

Cauchi noted that the project was part of a wider initiative to revitalize public spaces in the region. The new greenway, designed for cyclists and joggers, will also be included in the works, with minimal disruption to existing parking.
