During the second quarter of 2023, sea transport between Malta and Gozo experienced significant growth in passengers, vehicles, and trips compared to the same period in 2022, a new NSO report reveals.
Between April and June 2023, a total of 11,159 trips were conducted, carrying a significant number of 1,724,703 passengers. The busiest month was June, accounting for 3,904 trips or 35.0% of the total trips for the quarter.
Passenger traffic between Mġarr and Ċirkewwa during the second quarter of 2023 reached 1,541,916, marking a 14.0% increase compared to the corresponding quarter in 2022. April had the highest number of passengers, with 528,924 or 34.3% of the total for the quarter. Vehicle numbers also rose by 4.0% from the previous year, totaling 518,198.
The number of trips during the second quarter amounted to 8,905, reflecting a 2.7% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
May had the highest number of trips, with 3,069 or 34.5% of the total trips for the quarter.
Regarding passenger and vehicle traffic originating from Ċirkewwa and Mġarr terminals, it was observed that Saturdays and Fridays were the busiest days. However, from the Mġarr terminal, Sundays and Saturdays saw the highest passenger traffic, while Sundays and Mondays had the highest vehicle traffic.
In terms of specific data for trips and passengers, during the second quarter of 2023, a total of 2,254 trips carried 182,787 passengers. This represented a significant increase of 35.5% in trips and 44.6% in passengers compared to the same quarter in 2022.
June stood out as the busiest month with 924 trips (41.0% of total trips for the quarter) and 75,749 passengers (41.4% of total passengers for the quarter).
