At a conference at the University of Malta, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation, Clifton Grima, announced the launch of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s (EMBL) Advanced Mobile Laboratory, which will be based in Malta for four weeks.

Minister Grima and Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, highlighted the significance of this initiative for Malta’s scientific community.

“This is another important step in our commitment to science and research, benefiting not just academics and students, but the wider community,” said Grima. Azzopardi Tanti added that the project would not only provide academic training but also inspire young people and position Malta as a key player in maritime and environmental research.

Malta has been a member of EMBL since 2016, and in 2022, EMBL and the University of Malta signed an agreement to promote scientific exchange in areas such as Infection Biology, Human Ecosystems, Planetary Biology, and Data Sciences.

Melissa Formosa, Associate Professor at the University of Malta, described the lab’s presence as a milestone for the local scientific community. As for the rest of the week, isolated rain showers along with strong wind gusts are set to be expected. Temperatures could get as low as 16 to 18 degrees Celsius on different days of this week all the way to next Monday.

According to Maltese weather page ‘It-Temp Madwarna’, the Maltese islands will be in a zone of convergence between Tuesday and Wednesday.

This is the meteorological spot wherein hot and cold air meet. Colder currents behind the already cold front will push sandy and hot air towards us.
