Between January 2017 and September of this year, the police registered 143 cases of suicide in Malta and Gozo.
This was revealed by Minister for Internal Affairs Byron Camilleri in a reply to a parliamentary inquiry by PN MP Paula Mifsud Bonnici, where he went on to reveal that 29 of the cases were foreign individuals.
In 2022, a total of 19 suicides have been reported so far, with 16 of them being male cases and three cases happening in Gozo. Last year, 34 suicide cases were registered in Malta, with 24 of them being male cases whilst 2020 saw a total 22 cases of suicide.
Back in June, The Richmond Foundation had spoken out on the amount of suicide cases in Malta, calling the local mental health crisis ‘the pandemic that no one talks about.‘
