14-year-old Javier’s passing shocks Malta

Javier Micallef was a 14-year-old boy who suffered from a condition which resulted in parts of his brain being missing. Javier sadly passed away this morning, as announced by Puttinu Cares, who knew the boy’s family closely. The somber news explains how Dorelle and Dennis gave their lives for the young boy, being exemplary and loving parents throughout.

Javier’s condition was called Rhombencephalosynapsis, a condition so rare that it is believed that only 50 cases exist in the entire world. Javier will be remembered through his loving family who, according to Puttinu, showed everyone how through despite great sorrow and pain, love can still be a phenomenal force.

Health authorities to determine fate of feast processions

The Church has revealed that feast processions will only be allowed to occur should the health authorities give the green light. This regulation was part of the Church’s directives for summer feast celebrations which take effect today. With feasts and outdoor activities stopped to mitigate COVID-19 spread, the Church warned that measures should always be respected and it will be up to the parish priest to draw up a programme for liturgical celebrations.

Celebrations are to be held on Sunday or a feast date, with those held outside the church building being only allowed by health authorities’ permission. In a statement, the Church stated that cooperation and maturity between different parties would truly honour the respective saints as COVID-19 remains a very real danger.

Air pollution increase following school reopening

Environment and Resources Authority informed TVM that at an increase in air pollution has been noted following the reopening of schools. This was in fact preceded by a decrease in air pollution as the main source of air pollution, traffic, drastically decreased.

Utilising analysis of information collected by air monitoring stations ERA has located in three localities, the organisation concluded that the level of nitrogen dioxide, which is the main culprit behind pollution, increased considerably mid-October.

Official Nadine Mercieca explained how ‘when we speak about the months of the year: from January to March, the level of pollution remained stable, but in April we began to see an increase compared with April 2020, but it still has not reached the levels of 2019.’ She added; ‘the level of pollution reflects the amount of traffic and its influx.’
