14% increase in domestic violence service use in 2020

The use of services related to domestic violence saw a 14% increase in 2020 when compared to the previous year. Figures released by the National Statistics Office said that 2,919 people made us of such services in 2020.

79% of these persons were women, with the primary services used by people experiencing domestic violence were the Domestic Violence Unit within Agenzija Appogg.

There were 2,324 registered cases within the agency, with the police department registering 1,820 individual reports.

In 2020, more than half of the total cases registered across all services were persons aged over 40. 87%, a majority, were cases involving Maltese nationals. Over 90% of cases registered during 2020 were persons who experience psychological violence.

Of the police cases in 2020, more than 60% were persons experiencing psychological violence, with 38% reporting physical violence. Most cases involved male perpetrators, with only eight cases involving female perpetrators.

The majority of perpetrators were aged between 30 and 49, with 2020 seeing a total of 153 perpetrators using one or more services. 145 were males and 8 females.

Alex Borg will not rule out future PN leadership

Gozitan MP Alex Borg has revealed he will not contest the PN leadership, but he has not ruled out any future bids.

Borg told Times of Malta that he does not rule out contesting for the role in the future, but he says that he is still very new to politics and must ‘mature in it before taking that step.’

‘Furthermore, it would not bee health for the PN to go through another divisive leadership election right now. We must join forces in support of Bernard Grech’ he said.

Borg was one of the more successful PN candidates in Gozo during the general election, getting elected as shadow minister for the island. He also confirmed that several Nationalist Party supporters urged him to contest leadership.

A survey by MaltaToday on Sunday found that around 70% of PN councillors want Grech to stay on as leader. Asked who they would see as an alternative leader, they mentioned Alex Borg as their fourth preference, right after Joe Giglio, Roberta Metsola and Adrian Delia.

Borg said that he was always taught to walk before he runs, but added that nobody knows what might happen in the future. ‘I have full confidence in Bernard Grech as I have always had in every PN leader. And I want to work with the leader for the benefit of the Maltese and Gozitan people.’

World’s oldest person Kane Tanaka dies aged 119 in Japan

Kane Tanaka, the woman certified as the world’s oldest person, has just passed away at the age of 119.

Tanaka was born back in January 2nd 1903 in the southwest region of Fukuoka, Japan. This is the same year the Wright brothers flew for the first time and Marie Curie became thee first woman to win a Nobel Prize.

The board game loving Tanaka was in relatively good health until recently, living in a nursing home solving math problems and eating chocolate. Tanaka ran several businesses when she was younger.

She heralded a noodle shop as well as a rice cake tore. She got married in 1922, which is a century ago. She gave birth to four children and went on to adopt a fifth.

Were it not for the pandemic, she would have used a wheelchair to participate in the torch relay for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Local governor Seitaro Hattori announced she passed away on April 19th.

Japan has the world’s most elderly population, with around 28% aged 65 or over. The oldest ever living person verified by Guinness was Frenchwoman Jeanne Louise Calment, who died aged 122 years and 164 days in 1997.

German cliff diver Hanes, along with a group of other adrenaline-seeking companions, has set his sights to Malta’s sea-side heights as his next challenge.

Hanes has been trying out some of Europe’s most challenging cliff-dives along with his friends, performing stunts and flips as they soar off the edge into the water.

Malta is no stranger to cliff divers as it offers adrenaline junkies some of the tallest edges to leap off of as well as crystal blue seas to welcome the dive. Hanes was filmed hitting some notable points around Malta and Gozo, making every dive look effortless.

However, there is a dark side to Malta’s cliff diving history, as several reports throughout the years highlighted injuries, reckless behaviour and even death as the thrill seekers sought out their next stunt.

Back in 2011, a video was uploaded by young British tourists as they jumped off areas such as it-Tieqa in Dwejra. Some ended up with back injuries, with one even having to be airlifted to Mater Dei hospital after jumping off a building forming part of Lazzaretto in Manoel Island.
