12-Year-Old Thomas Gatt leading the Initiative to transform plot into community park in the heart of Swieqi.

Thomas’s dedication caught the attention of the relevant authorities, and an agreement was reached for him and volunteer supporters to contribute to the creation and upkeep of a new open space in the heart of Swieqi. The site lies within the development zone and is close to the parish church, making it easily accessible to the community.

“My idea was to borrow a piece of land from the government, embellish it, and make it a beautiful green area in nature created and maintained by the surrounding community, but also for the community to enjoy,” he said.

Minister Dalli praised the young boy’s vision, saying, “When I met Thomas, I saw not just enthusiasm, but a real determination to bring about change. This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to enhance the quality of life through greener, open spaces.”

Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi noted that the land transfer is part of a wider strategy to reclaim urban spaces for public use.

Help Shape Malta’s Next National Strategy For Voluntary Sector

Help Shape Malta's Next National Strategy For Voluntary Sector
Apr 22 2025 Share

The upcoming National Strategy on Volunteering 2025–2030 builds on the foundations laid by the first national strategy published in 2020. As Malta’s voluntary sector continues to evolve within a diverse and changing society, this new strategy aims to respond to emerging challenges through more effective use of human, physical, and financial resources. Central to its vision are increased participation, collaboration, and engagement across all levels of the community.

Volunteering continues to be a powerful avenue for meaningful social connection, active citizenship, and inclusion. The new strategy recognises the transformative impact of voluntary action—not only on individuals and organisations, but on society as a whole.

Public consultation meetings have already taken place in both Malta and Gozo, with valuable contributions from voluntary organisations and their members. However, feedback is still being accepted, and all stakeholders—including volunteers, organisations, corporate partners, and public entities—are encouraged to participate.

The consultation seeks input on the draft’s strategic aims, additional areas for consideration, and how proposed goals can be translated into practical action.

📅 Deadline for feedback: Friday 25th April 2025

Archbishop Charles Scicluna Signs Book Of Condolences For Pope Francis

Apr 22 2025 Share

Archbishop Charles Scicluna has signed the book of condolences in memory of His Holiness Pope Francis at the Apostolic Nunciature to Malta, located in Tal-Virtù, Rabat.

The gesture served as a solemn tribute to the life and legacy of Pope Francis, who passed away just after Easter Sunday.

Members of the public are invited to pay their respects by leaving messages in the book from Tuesday until Thursday, 24 April 2025, between 10am and 12:30pm, and again from 3pm to 5:30pm.

In a deeply spiritual reflection, the Archbishop recalled the words Miserando atque eligendo — “Having mercy on him, he chose him” — taken from the Venerable Bede. These words were dear to Pope Francis and encapsulated his belief that the Lord’s call is rooted in mercy.

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis exemplified the Gospel through his actions and teachings, always emphasising compassion, humility, and tenderness.

Archbishop Scicluna expressed gratitude for Pope Francis’s unwavering guidance, calling him a faithful, wise, and humble shepherd. “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,” he said, honouring the Pope’s enduring spiritual legacy.
