1 COVID-19 case registered with 3 recoveries

Malta has registered 1 new case of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 1,839 swab tests, while 3 patients have recovered. No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Sunday 20th June 2021, 625,844 vaccine doses were administered of which 351,962 were 1st doses. 285,817 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 30,589 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 30,142 have recovered, 420 died and 27 are still active.

Trash left on St. George’s bay due to illegal mass gatherings

St. George’s Bay has been receiving hundreds of people over the weekends following the closure of bars and clubs at midnight. However, the illegality also brings with it large amounts of rubbish left behind by people who take to the beach to keep their night out going.

Many have called out to authorities to fix the situation by allowing entertainment venues to be allowed to operate later than midnight. This would not only be a controlled environment where the spread of COVID-19 would be mitigated, but will also have the added benefit of keeping the beach clean. If not, beach goers are highly encouraged to not leave rubbish behind as they leave the area – even though the mass gatherings are in themselves should not be occurring.

Increase in admissions for attempted suicide during COVID-19 pandemic

Mount Carmel Hospital recorded an increase in cases of suicide attempts ever since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. A study conducted by a specialist trainee in the psychiatry noted that the pandemic affected many lives from different angles and some individuals faced immensely difficult psychological bouts of mental health issues, leading to the increase in admissions. It was found that there were more admissions in 2020 when compared to 2019.

Dr Daniela Zammit, who conducted the study, spoke to The Malta Independent and stated that ‘one cannot simplify [suicide] to assume that it is the end-point of sever depression and/or the inevitable reaction to an adverse life event.’ She highlighted how suicide in Malta tends to peak around March and August with a slight increase in December. Zammit said that one should call 112 if it is an emergency, or the Richmond helpline on 1770, Appoġġ on 179 or use the online support services www.kellimni.com to get any required aid.

Temperature to hit 40 degrees Celsius in upcoming week

An insanely hot week is to be expected up ahead as temperatures will be rising to around 40 degrees celsius for the first week of summer. The temperatures will go up from feeling around 36 degrees celsius to a sizzling 40 degrees by the end of this upcoming week (20th – 26th June).

The hot temperature will increase gradually, with UV racking up at 11 by the end of the week. Despite this being amazing for many sea lovers, it is wise to protect oneself against the heat and sunlight by wearing sun cream, finding shaded shelter and avoiding the peak hours of sunlight.
