0 COVID-19 cases registered with 1 recovery

Malta has registered 0 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 1,692 swab tests, while 1 patient has recovered. No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Wednesday 23rd June 2021, 636,059 vaccine doses were administered of which 353,584 were 1st doses. 294,650 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 30,595 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 30,149 have recovered, 420 died and 26 are still active.

Billie Eilish apologises following video of artist mouthing racial slur

Superstar Billie Eilish has apologised following a video of her apparently mouthing along to a song which uses an anti-Asian racial slur surfaces. The seven-time Grammy winner posted a statement on Instagram story last Monday, addressing the edited compilation of videos circulating earlier this month. In the clips, Eilish was seen mouthing the slur and apparently imitating an accent in another.

Eilish was allegedly 13 or 14 at the time, and stated that she is appalled and embarrassed, saying that the fact that she mouthed to that word makes her want to ‘barf.’ She said that regardless of her ignorance and age at the time, nothing excuses the fact that it was hurtful. Addressing the accent, she said that it was only silly gibberish she used constantly with friends, pets and family. She said that it was in ‘NO way an imitation of anyone or any language, accent, or culture in the SLIGHTEST.’

WATCH: Rosianne Cutajar hits back at Repubblika over double standards

Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar hit back at Repubblika over double standards following the NGO’s calling of the Police Commissioner to investigate the MP over ethics breach. The case centred around a number of images showing Cutajar giving small bags of oranges to elderly residents in the Smartcare Dar Pinto home in Qormi, her home town.

Cutajar stated that despite trying to understand and work on situations when someone doesn’t agree or criticises her, she found it baffling to make a request to the Police Commissioner because of ‘four oranges.’ She called it disproportionate and completely exaggerated, and was particularly critical of the President of Republika Robert Aquilina.

Cutajar stated that Robert, who is Nationalist MP Karol Aquilina’s brother, never approached her when passing by each other around Valletta. Cutajar also highlighted how Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi presented a generous food donation to an NGO in his electoral district just hours after Republika called for an investigation into Cutajar’s gifts.

Cutajar said that if her action breaks electoral laws, then so does Azzopardi’s gesture. Referencing the Nationalist Party, she stated that ‘Jason Azzopardi can carry out these gestures in his district. Everyone on that side of the room can do this.’

Possible short power cuts due to ongoing cable repairs

Enemalta warned on Wednesday morning that short power cuts were possible as engineers and technicians continue to work on fixing damaged underground cables. The damaged caused outages in the central part of Malta late on Tuesday and overnight. The power cuts affected parts of Lija, Mosta, Gharghur, Naxxar and some other localities, starting at around 6 pm.

The power was restored within an hour in some areas as supply sources were shifted between the sub-stations. Some areas however had to endure a long night of heat without air conditioning or fans. Enemalta stated that the damage was caused by temperature fluctuations, yet assured that there is enough supply capacity. It also stated that power was restored shortly after 4 am.
